Just Book It And Be Done…

Something exciting is going to happen for my wife, my oldest son and me in the next month. We are going to New York City to watch our favorite baseball team play against the New York Mets. We’ve already seen our team play against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium but now we get to return to The Big Apple and watch them play against the other powerful New York team.

New York City is special. It’s full of life, energy, lights, and endless possibilities. I’ve been a few times before, and the city has never disappointed me. I’m hoping that in addition to the baseball game, we get a chance to do both touristy things and some of the non-touristy things to enhance our experience in this vibrant city.

My son has some great ideas for us and it is nice, for a change, to let someone else do the planning so my wife and I can just go along for the ride. It is a treat to see your children as adults doing adult things. Yep, we are very proud.

The one thing that my wife and I are taking care of is the hotel room. Now, lodging is expensive everywhere. But NYC lodging is on a different level, at least for this trip. Yikes! Not only is it expensive, but rooms are hard to find. We plan on embarking on plenty of adventures in addition to the baseball game. So, finding a hotel convenient to many areas of NYC can be challenging. And I did mention it was rather pricey, right? I think it bears, repeating, when I say, yikes!

So, for a few weeks, my wife and I have been on the computer looking for a place to stay. We narrowed it down to several and then changed our minds and then went back to original choices and then changed our minds again. We just didn’t want to make a mistake.

We went on different travel websites, we went to individual hotel websites, we asked people who knew the areas, etc. After a lot of research and effort, we struggled to make a decision. Now for me, this is not unusual as I tend to over analyze and drag my feet on everything due to my perfectionist nature. But, for my wife, this was unusual. She is usually the “let’s make a decision” person so we can move on.

A few days ago, my wife said today is the day and I’ll be up in your office and we’re just going to book a room. I don’t know why we struggled with this decision as it seems so insignificant as compared to the time we were going to spend and enjoying each other’s company in this great city.

We narrowed it down to two choices and finally “pulled the trigger” and booked our hotel only to find out now that it probably wasn’t the best choice of hotel. Not for location or price, but for the style of hotel. It isn’t “seedy “or inappropriate in anyway, possibly just suited more for the type of traveler who doesn’t care about any amenities other than a small room with a bed and maybe a coffee maker. Other than that, it looks like a really nice place. It’s just VERY minimal.

Now, I’m a big guy. My son inherited my genes and he is tall and built. My poor wife is going to have to endure two big smelly men in this tiny room for three long nights.
I know she loves us, but this will be a test of just how far she’s willing to go!

I guess the thing we need to remember is that our trip is not about the room, but about the experiences we will have outside of that little room. And who knows, we just may be surprised at the fun we have at that hotel!

So, what does this have to do with running an online business? Well, I’m glad you asked!

When it comes to business decisions, we often get stuck on the “hotel room.” That one thing that seems huge in the moment, but in reality, it’s just one small part of the bigger picture. Yes, the details matter. The right website design, the right email sequence, the right product description are all important. But none of those matter nearly as much as the larger experience you’re creating for your customers and the progress you’re making in your business.

Just like our New York trip isn’t about the room, your business success won’t be defined by one tiny detail. It’s about the entire experience, the growth, the connections, the opportunities, and yes, even the lessons you learn along the way. Getting hung up on perfection in one small area can stall your momentum and keep you from moving forward.

Here are five steps to keep in mind when looking at the big picture and not letting one decision distract you.

  1. Focus on Your Purpose – Remember why you started. The hotel room wasn’t the trip, it was simply part of it. In business, don’t confuse the tools with the mission.
  2. Weigh What Really Matters – Some decisions carry more weight than others. If a choice won’t make or break your business, don’t spend weeks agonizing over it.
  3. Set a Decision Deadline – Give yourself a timeframe. Without it, you’ll endlessly analyze and second-guess. A deadline forces clarity.
  4. Be Okay With Imperfection – Not every decision will be the “perfect” one, but every decision moves you forward. You can always adjust and improve.
  5. Choose and Commit – Progress comes from action. At some point, you have to pull the trigger and move on.

The lesson here is done is better than perfect. If you wait until everything is flawless before launching a website, releasing a product, or posting content, you’ll be waiting forever. Meanwhile, others are out there building, learning, and growing because they decided, acted, and kept moving.

That hotel room might not be perfect, but it won’t define our trip. The laughter, the baseball game, and the time with family will. In your business, the same holds true. Don’t let one detail hold you hostage. Make the best decision you can with the information you have, move forward, and let the bigger experience unfold.

Now that the trip has been planned, let’s see what kind of shenanigans we can get ourselves into as we explore and conquer the Big Apple! It is going to be fun!

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing; the next best thing is the wrong thing; the worst thing you can do is nothing.” – Theodore Roosevelt

“A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.” – George S. Patton

And of course, a few VERY BAD Dad jokes:

A tourist asked me if Yankee Stadium was in the Bronx. I said, “Of course and the Mets play in Queens, which is fitting, because their fans deserve a royal headache.”

What’s harder than finding an affordable hotel room in Manhattan? Finding a Mets pitcher with a winning record.

Until next time, STAY FRESH, Friends!

  1. You will have so much fun!! So happy for you all. Yes perfection or progress! Are they mutually exclusive? Probably. But we can tweak along the way. Maybe not hotel rooms but everything else on our online journey! You can make great Tik Tok Videos in NY! Good WIFI all over the city.

    1. Hi Kate – Yes, we are looking forward to this trip and I will believe it will be very memorable. I’m looking forward to seeing what type of content I can make on my trip without interrupting the purpose of my trip which is unlimited time with my family. Sometimes it’s hard to separate business from pleasure but I think there can be a balance. thanks for your visit to my blog and for your comments!

  2. Hey Ernie, it sounds like such an amazing trip! I love how you tied your hotel adventure into business decisions. It’s so true that we can get stuck stressing over the little stuff when the big picture is what really matters. Done is definitely better than perfect, and sometimes those “not-so-perfect” choices end up making the best stories. I can definitely relate to this! I’ve caught myself overthinking little details in my business all the time, only to realize later that they didn’t matter as much as I thought. Can’t wait to hear about all the fun you have in NYC. I hope you have a fun time!

    1. Hi Meredith – We really are looking forward to this much needed time away. I always tend to find a way to tie in my personal life and stories with my business life. I think it’s how I correlate things and how my mind works. I am an overthinker and a perfectionist and sometimes that gets in my way. I really do need to learn that perfection it’s something to be strived for but if I can’t obtain it, that’s OK as well. And you’re right, sometimes those not so perfect moments do make the best stories. Heck, it’s really what my blog posts are all about… my not so perfect life that helps me learn in business. But I do love my life, and I do love my business! Thank you for your visit to my blog post and have a wonderful week!

  3. Now that looks like a great trip Ernie!
Like you, I’m seen as a perfectionist but with time (and help by the wife), I’ve become a little better (working on it) at taking decisions and going with it!
It is rather ironic how we can stumble on things that, afterwards, we can see as being so inconsequential and yet, at the moment, we’ve looked at it from every side. Tried to find alternatives…etc…etc.. They do say that hindsight is 20/20!
Can’t wait to read about the trip! BTW, you didn’t tell us which team you’re rooting for? Hope it’s not the Expos?!? LOL!

    1. Hi Marc – Being a perfectionist is challenging as oftentimes were never satisfied. Like you, I have a very supportive and encouraging wife who helps me see the bigger picture. I tend to get so focused on what’s in front of me at any given moment and often forget to look at what’s behind which might be more important. I’m a work in progress and I’m learning but I’m enjoying every bit of the learning. We are huge Texas Ranger fans. We follow them game by game and try to attend as many live games as possible even if it’s only a few a year. I’d really be out of the “park” if I was an Expo fan, right? 🙂 Thanks for your visit to my blog post and for your nice comments. Your support is very much appreciated!
