A few days ago, I got one of those random texts from my oldest son. Now, if you have grown kids, you know exactly what I mean. It can be anything from a joke, to a random thought, to something that makes you stop and say, “Where did that come from?” And honestly, I love it.
We have a great relationship. I will always be his dad, but somewhere along the way it turned into something more. I have become a sounding board, an advice giver, a cheerleader, a guy he can laugh with, and occasionally the guy he reminds is getting older. It is one of the greatest blessings of this stage of life.
So, he texts me and says he heard a song while he was out that instantly made him think of a specific movie scene. Not just the movie, but the exact moment in the movie. Then he asked me if I remembered any more songs like that. You know, the ones where you hear the first few seconds and you are immediately transported somewhere else.
Now, that is a dangerous question to ask a guy from my generation.
Before I knew it, I was firing back songs like I was hosting a radio show. Songs tied to movies, scenes, moments, and memories. Some serious, some funny, and some that probably made him question my taste in music. It turned into one of those simple but meaningful exchanges that just sticks with you.
But what really caught my attention afterward was not just the conversation. It was the realization that he understood something pretty powerful. Music is not just music. It is memory, it is emotion, it is association and it is a trigger that takes you somewhere instantly.
And that got me thinking.
