I have worn glasses my entire life. No big deal as they have been part of my look longer than my wife’s hairstyle has stayed consistent (I’m going to get it for that one 😉). But over the last five or six years something showed up that I was not exactly excited to talk about.
I fought it, was in complete denial and may have shed a few inner tears, but it was determined I needed Progressive Lenses.
If I am being honest, I did not even want to bring it up. It felt like one of those quiet milestones that you just accept and move on from without announcing it to the world. No need to make it official and no need to draw attention. Just put them on and keep living life.
For those who may not know, progressive lenses are glasses where the prescription gradually changes depending on where you are looking. The top helps you see at a distance. The middle is for things right in front of you like your computer or dashboard. The bottom is for reading your phone or a document. It all blends together so your eyes can move naturally without those old school lines.
Now let me say this up front. I understand what they are and I understand why I need them. That does not mean I have to like it.
The first time I put them on I felt like I had just stepped onto a moving sidewalk that I did not agree to. I looked straight ahead and things were fine. I looked down and suddenly I was reading like a scholar. I looked somewhere in between and I was not entirely sure what dimension I had entered. At one point I think I tried to read my phone while looking at the microwave clock and almost pulled a neck muscle.
Then came the headaches. Apparently, my eyes and my brain had a team meeting and decided they were not aligned on this whole progressive situation. For a few days everything felt slightly off. I was tilting my head like I was trying to solve a mystery. My wife asked me if I was okay and I told her I was just adjusting. She said it looked more like I was buffering.
And of course, I made the mistake of telling my friends and kids about my new “situation.” That was a poor decision.
Nothing invites comedy like a dad admitting he has graduated to progressive lenses. I got hit with everything from “Welcome to the club” to “Do you need us to increase the font size on your phone too?” One of them even asked if I wanted a magnifying glass for Christmas. I said I would prefer respect, but apparently that was not in stock.
But then something happened. My eyes adjusted and all of a sudden the world got clearer. I could see far away, I could see what was right in front of me and I could read without squinting like I was trying to decode ancient text. It was like everything came into focus at the exact moment I needed it to.
I hate to admit this, but I actually started to like them. Please don’t tell anyone. 😉
The best part is you cannot even see the difference. There are no lines and no big announcement. Just me quietly walking around seeing things in a whole new light like I had discovered a secret level in life.
Then I made another mistake. I put my old glasses back on and that lasted about five minutes. Everything felt off and I was back to squinting, adjusting, guessing. I had gotten so used to clarity that going back felt like I had taken a step backward. That was the moment it hit me.
I am officially a believer (Not in getting older. I am still working through that part). But in using the right tools to see clearly.
So, what does this have to do with running an online business? Well, I’m glad you asked!
Running a business without clarity is a lot like wearing the wrong pair of glasses. You might be able to get by, but you are working harder than you need to and missing things that are right in front of you.
At some point, we all reach a place where what used to work just does not work the same way anymore. The market shifts. Technology changes. Our audience evolves. And if we are honest, sometimes we just cannot see things as clearly as we once thought we could.
That is where tools come in. Not because we are incapable, but because we want to be effective.
Think about what this looks like in real life.
It could be using a platform to track scans, understand where your customers are engaging, and adjust your messaging without reprinting a single thing. That is clarity.
It could be your email system showing you open rates, click behavior, and what content is actually connecting so you are not just sending messages into the void. That is clarity.
It could be a simple dashboard that shows where your leads are coming from, what is converting, and where people are dropping off so you can fix the gaps instead of guessing. That is clarity.
It could even be something as straightforward as having one place where your links, offers, and content live so your customer is not bouncing around trying to figure out where to go next. That is clarity.
These are your progressive lenses in business. They help you see what is far ahead, what is right in front of you, and what needs your immediate attention without strain.
Here Is Why Clarity And Adaptation Matter More Than We Sometimes Want To Admit
- You make better decisions when you can clearly see what is working and what is not
- You stop wasting time on things that feel productive but are not producing results
- You create a better experience for your customers because you understand their journey
- You gain confidence because you are no longer guessing your way through growth
- You position yourself to adapt quickly when things change instead of reacting too late
The truth is, most of us resist these tools at first. We tell ourselves we are fine. We say we will figure it out. We convince ourselves that what worked before will keep working. And just like me with those glasses, we might even feel a little uncomfortable admitting we need something different.
But once you make the adjustment, everything changes. You start to see opportunities you missed before, you begin to understand your business at a deeper level, and most importantly, you stop straining to make things work and start operating with clarity and confidence.
If you have ever felt like you are working harder than you should be or not quite seeing the results you expected, it might not be your effort. It might just be your perspective. Or maybe it is time for a better set of lenses.
I would love to hear from you on this. Have you ever resisted a tool or a change that you later realized made everything easier? Drop a comment and share your experience. Those are the stories that help all of us see a little more clearly.
And if you are looking for a place that brings together the tools, training, and support to help you see your business from every angle, take a look at Internet Profits Academy. It is designed to help you focus on what matters and build with clarity instead of confusion.
Because at the end of the day, the goal is not just to work harder. It is to see better.
As for me, I am going to keep wearing my progressive lenses and pretending I have always been this wise.
My wife looked at me the other day, smiled, and said, “It is amazing what you can see clearly now. If only we could do something about your hearing.” I told her I heard that perfectly fine. I just chose not to respond. Unfortunately, my new glasses allowed me to perfectly see her “eye roll” followed up with “the look.” If you know you know!
“You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” — Mark Twain
“It is not that I’m so smart. It is just that I stay with problems longer.” — Albert Einstein
And of course, a few VERY BAD Dad jokes:
I told my kids I’m dialing in my focus. They said, “On what?” I said, “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
I don’t have a clarity problem. I have a “too many ideas and not enough coffee” situation.
Until next time, STAY FRESH, Friends!

Hey Ernie –
Yes! Those moments of ‘clarity’ in life and in business are so valuable!! It helps us to focus and prioritize, and be less blurred in the things that distract and get us off course.
I enjoy your delightful real-life stories. Thank you for sharing your insights in such a way to bring more awareness to how our every day lives and experiences can positively affect many different areas, including business!!
Sincerely,
KAS
KAS – Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. You really captured the heart of what I was trying to share. It is funny how those moments of clarity can sneak up on us in everyday life and suddenly help us see things differently in business too.
I truly appreciate your encouragement and kind words about my stories and writing style. Comments like yours remind me why I enjoy sharing these little life moments in the first place. Thank you again for taking the time to read and leave such a meaningful perspective.
Hey Ernie,
I really liked the helpful tips you gave in this post about using tools to see what’s really going on in your business
I use some of these things in my own business now, but I definitely didn’t know to look at them when I first started. Back then, I was doing a lot more guessing than tracking, and that made everything feel harder than it really needed to be.
That’s why I think this post is so helpful, especially for someone just starting out who may not even know what they should be paying attention to yet. The right tools are not just extra tech sitting there. They can really help you see what is working, what needs fixing, and where to focus next.
Thank you for sharing this, Ernie. It was a great reminder, and I think a lot of people will relate to it. 😊
Hi Meredith – Thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate you sharing your own experience because I think so many people can relate to that feeling of guessing their way through things in the beginning. Most of us start out thinking we just need to work harder, when sometimes we simply need better visibility into what is actually happening.
I also loved what you said about tools not just being “extra tech.” That is such an important point. The right tools can save time, reduce frustration, and help us focus on the things that truly matter instead of spinning our wheels. Thank you again for your encouragement and for always adding such meaningful insight to the conversation.
Hi Ernie,
Ah yes… those “I’m getting older” moments. (That don’t necessarily mean that you are wiser..at least that’s what I’ve been told).
The one thing that I’ve found with time is that the more you try to stall those life moments, the harder it is to accept them. So getting glasses for my 50th birthday was, like you, a bit disconcerting but hey; it gave me a different look; something more of a professor’s look 🙂
That being said, you are definitely right when you mention that we need to have clarity and be laser focused on what we need to do to get our online business going. The great part is that, with AI, we can have an even clearer way of getting to where we want to.
Cheers,
Hi Marc – Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. I had to laugh at the “professor look” because I think that is exactly what we all tell ourselves once the glasses arrive. We may not always get wiser overnight, but apparently, we do start looking like we know important things. 😄
I really appreciate your perspective about accepting those life moments instead of fighting them. And you are absolutely right about clarity in business too. The tools available today, especially AI, can help remove so much of the guesswork if we are willing to adapt and learn. Thank you again for taking the time to visit my post and comment.
